Bijou Spun in Colors!

While our customers seem to love our Bijou Spun's natural browns and creams, there is always that underlying desire to see and feel the luxury of Bijou Spun yak fiber in colors. Well now you can! Recently, a number of independent dyers have been purchasing our yarns and rovings and then dying them in various colorways and then offering them for sale.

On this page we will feature these dyers who are colorfully customizing our Bijou Spun yak fibers and yarns. These are folks who we know on a somewhat personal basis as well as a professional one and who we know do an excellent job of enhancing our Bijou Spun line with colors. So if you simply just can not live in a brown and cream world, here is your chance to break free!

MacKintosh Yarns was started in July 2007 in Iowa City, Iowa. They produce high quality hand-dyed yarns in multiple different bases. The company has been expanding over the past two years and now includes over eleven base yarns, including Bijou Spun, and hope to include more base yarns in the years to come. The company was founded and is run by Liz Bernstein. She is a graduate of the University of Iowa with a bachelor's in Theatre Arts and a certificate in Performing Arts Entrepreneurship. She currently resides in Iowa City, Iowa. Her background in fine arts, especially watercolor and oil painting and her love of fibers and knitting has driven her desire to create beautiful works of art with yarn and spinning fibre.

Snicklefritz is an indie hand-dyed yarn company devoted to playing with the chemistry of the dyeing process to create unique and fun colorways. They use only non-toxic materials in their processes and strive to use products that are safe for the environment. If it's something that normally requires a fume hood, they don't use it! They also use special dying techniques to produce colorways that don't pool or flash.

Kitchen Sink Dyeworks is run by Mercedes Tarasovich-Clark in Birmingham, Alabama. Mercedes' major in college was fibers and textiles, that’s where she gained her knowledge of dyeing fabrics, fibers and yarns. Once she graduated she picked up knitting and spinning for fun and dyed to create colorful fibers for herself and friends. After working in other parts of the knitting/needlework industry for the last five years, Mercedes decided to return to dyeing and designing full time. We think she has quite an array of gorgeous colors. Deep, rich, semi-solids which allow you to see all the subtleties and layers of the color with no pooling or stripes.
